Ardmore

Just a few miles off the Cork/Waterford N25 road lies the seaside village of Ardmore. This coastal village owes its name to its clifftop location with its breaktaking views looking out over the sea. On arrival Ardmore is easily identified by the large perfectly preserved 12th century round tower and cathedral that stands over the village as much as it is by the many blue flag sandy beaches nearby. It has a rich history which can be seen in the many ruins and ancient buildings denoting different time periods notably its many Christian monuments and abbeys as well as Ardmore castle.

Ardmore is a popular seaside resort in summer and has some very nice beaches including the large mile long beach on which it overlooks, the imaginatively titled “Main Beach”. Although today large scale local fishing is limited due to restrictions, the sea still plays a part in the village with many watersports and angling opportunities. Along the coast lie the remains of many shipwrecks which sank along the coastline over the centuries, the most visible one being that of the “Samsun” a crane ship which came undone off nearby Rams Head in 1987. This wreck now serves as a popular diving spot.
