Ballyseede Castle

Ballyseede Castle is ideally located, on the main Tralee-Killarney road, two km east of Tralee. The 15th century Ballyseede Castle is an ideal base for a memorable vacation. The castle hotel still is an imposing three-storey stone building, with a cut-stone door case, following a broad flight of steps up to the hall door. The impressive lobby features doric columns leading to an elegant wooden staircase of fine oak joinery which is almost unique in Ireland.

Ballyseede Castle was the chief garrison of the legendary Fitzgeralds, Earls of Desmond, many of whom refused to swear allegiance to the Crown, resulting in the infamous Geraldine Wars which continued intermittently for over three centuries. The war concluded with the capture and beheading of the 16th Earl, in the demesne of Ballyseede and the exhibiting of his head in a cage on London Bridge. Following their defeat the Earls lost the castle and 3,000 acres which became property of the Crown and were given to Robert Blennerhassett of Flimby, Cumberland with the strange rent of one red rose a year to be presented on Midsummer's Day. This family held the castle until 1966.

The 12 luxurious bedrooms are spacious and elegant with a variety from individually designed single to mini suites available. Two magnificent drawing rooms with cornices of ornamental foliage plasterwork adorned by marble fireplaces invite guests to spend relaxing evenings in front of the fire. The castle's dining room overlooks the lawn with its ancient oaks. The restaurant boasts a fine selection of continental cuisine as well as many traditional Irish dishes.

The hotel is located to Kerry's magnificent scenic jewels: the Lakes of Killarney, the Dingle Penisula and of course, the Ring of Kerry. Fishing, archery, shooting, riding, walking and of course, golf, are among the activities available locally.

Tralee sits in the shelter of Tralee Bay, with a panaroma of sea and mountains stretching into the west. Lying in the heart of Kerry, the coast, lakes and mountains of the Kingdom are all within arm's reach. The town is the capital of the county, the hub of its affairs. Tralee is a vibrant town, home to the Roses, the internationally known festival of Kerry. Tralee hosts the renowned Rose of Tralee International Festival every August, with enough attractions to occupy a few pleasant days including open-air free concerts, floats featuring the Roses, the circus and street entertainment.

Guest Reviews of

We loved Ballyseede Castle! The interior and exterior were beautiful and the grounds around the castle were lovely! Arthur and Einstein made it feel warm and homey, not like a hotel.

Shawn Thompson on Mon Jul 26 2010

A bit overpriced, but overall very good.

Zack Reinstein on Tue Jul 20 2010

We were disappointed in how early the shops were closed in Tralee. The city was empty at 6:00 PM.

Christopher Harvey on Wed Jul 14 2010

Could do with a pressure cleaning - which I didn't notice until the photos. Dinner was marvelous. A mix-up at checkin required waiting about 45 minutes for our room, then they tried to put us in a room that was occupied. Miscommunication amongst the staff very apparent - would have been nice if a pint was on the house while we waited.

Sheila Schaefer on Mon Jul 12 2010

unprententious - yet elegant!

Tracy Dougherty on Mon Jul 12 2010

This was the best place of the whole trip

Ted Grabbe on Wed Jun 23 2010

first class acommodation excellent staff and reception well recommeded

Lynda Perrins on Thu Jun 17 2010

Ballyseede was a very nice stop and we enjoyed the accomodations and quiet, restful location. The timing of our visit was not too excellent because a wedding was underway and the staff was busy trying to meet the preparatory conditions for the event. However, we all enjoyed walking around the hotel grounds and the relaxed atmosphere.

Frank Johnson on Thu Jun 17 2010

We were on the fourth floor, no elevator. Had to ask for help with luggage on arrival; none available on departure. Guest room furnishings; bedspread, coverlet, carpet, curtains seemed a little shabby and threadbare; not sure the carpet was really clean. Food was some of the best we had in Ireland.

Christianne Chase on Thu Jun 10 2010

This was a lovely change of pace. We felt "special" the moment we walked in. Our only complaint was the noise from other guests (talking loudly in the hall at a VERY late hour).

Colleen Amstutz on Thu May 27 2010

Very nice. We would definitely reoommend this hotel.

Denise Williamson on Thu May 27 2010

The rooms were beautiful! The only downside was they were on the third floor so it may carrying luggage up and down difficult since there was no elevator. The building and grounds were very impressive, as was the beautiful Irish Wolfhound.

Christine Bonner on Wed May 26 2010

Awesome! More of a castle experience than the other.

Michael Shoup on Mon May 24 2010

This was our favorie place to stay. The staff was wonderful. Very welcoming. The bartender was really personable and funny. Nice rooms. (we loved the dogs

Colleen Lyman on Fri Apr 30 2010

Because it was off season, we were the only ones in the dining room and bar. We felt like Queens and Kings and the service was very personable. The "feel at home" attitude was prevalent and my son enjoyed the dogs. We enjoyed playing chess in the living room, imagined ourselves a few 100 years back in time. The food was exceptional and the service five star!

Paige Patterson on Wed Apr 7 2010

After staying at the Ashford, it was hard to give this hotel it's due.

Jerry Washburn on Tue Mar 23 2010

we had 2 rooms - my mother-on-laws room was top knotch - our room on the other hand - the phone did not work, the heat was not on and the shower did not work properly

Kathy Conley on Tue Mar 23 2010

Loved this place! Room was beautiful, grounds were beautiful and the friendliest dogs and donkeys around! Our dinner was amazing! What a way to spend our 10th anniversary! I felt like the Queen!

Kimberly Hardgrave on Wed Dec 16 2009

My only comment is that there were a good deal of Americans there. We felt like we were in an American hotel rather than an Irish castle. When we went to Ireland we wanted to interact with the Irish people as much as possible. Other than that the accommodations were top notch

Dan Swartz on Tue Dec 8 2009

no wireless internet connection available without a fee, room was quite large, food was good and a good value, the kitchen accommodated my special dietary needs by creating a dessert - really nice

Barbara Karpel on Tue Nov 24 2009

Amazing place. Everyone was professional and yet still very nice. We were given a tour of the areas of the castle usually closed off for weddings and special events.

Daryl Mercier on Mon Nov 16 2009

Great people at Ballyseede and Arther the Irish Wolfhound actually made this stop our most pleasent. We were glad we stayed for two days there. The food was overpriced for the quality but the staff asked for our input and we gave some contructive menu options for them. Basically you could have 2 courses at dinner or 5 which were the two extremes of quantity of food which didn't satisfy what we wanted. Otherwise a great stop.

Scott Hamlin on Wed Nov 11 2009

Loved staying in a castle.

Danielle Carreau on Thu Nov 5 2009

A very pretty castle. Hosts were very accomodating and welcoming. Excellent dinner.

Leah Greene on Tue Nov 3 2009

Extremely pleasant and helpful staff; very comfortable environment.

Janet L Webster on Tue Oct 27 2009

Great food, great room. Thanks for the upgrade.

Tom Costello on Tue Oct 13 2009

It really turned out to be a highlight of the trip.

Mark Nelson on Wed Oct 7 2009

This was the best part of the trip. The room was outstanding! Can't say enough good about this place. Even Arthru & Einstein made it a great place to stay.

Christina Kelly on Tue Oct 6 2009

This was our favorite place to stay on the entire trip! It was beautiful, the people were very friendly, the room was huge--it truly felt like we were in a castle!

Crystal Pour on Mon Oct 5 2009

Very loud slamming doors etc.

Susan Roach on Mon Sep 28 2009

This was by far the highlight of the trip. I would rather stay there than the Ashford Castle. The Dogs are grand

William Wylie on Mon Sep 28 2009

Grett Castle to stay in ...It was the highlight of the trip !!!!

Philip Mcmahan on Wed Sep 23 2009

Hospitality - we weren't really greeted when we arrived, after a few minutes a young man showed up and took us to our room but there was a manager who didn't really speak to us. This wasn't a big deal but it would have made a very good experience a bit better overall.

Dennis Slevin on Mon Sep 21 2009

A very lovely place. The staff was polite and the room was beautiful.

Thy Ho on Tue Sep 15 2009

Very nice stay! I would recommend to anyone.

Ryan Kelly on Tue Sep 8 2009

Great ambiance.

Marjorie Wallace on Tue Aug 25 2009

This was a magical experience!

Tara Cryderman on Mon Aug 17 2009

Great hotel, would definatly recommend it to others!!

Jake Massey on Mon Aug 17 2009

We found our voucher but later as we gave them a B & B voucher. A call to you guys at myguideIreland got us relieved for our last night near Ratoath. Thanks Niamh!!!

Pierre Regamey on Wed Aug 12 2009

Small but fun.

Jane Beebe on Sat Aug 8 2009

The manager and his wife were expecting a baby at any hour but could not have been nicer!

Diane Kusinski on Fri Jul 24 2009

Stayed at Ballyseede Hotel one night

Lori-anne Weller on Thu Jul 23 2009

Both Dinner and Breakfast service was not very good. Quality of food for the Dinner could have been much better. Tim, the bartender, front desk clerk, bell boy, and local tour guide was great! Rooms ok but its more of a manor that a castle

Jack Black on Mon Jun 29 2009

Great place to stay on our first night in Ireland. Dinner was great and we felt pampered. Probably should have stayed longer.

Sandra Rudd on Sat Jun 6 2009

A little run down, gloomy. It was okay, but not what I had expected. Still enjoyed my stay though.

Tina Robinson on Sun Apr 19 2009

The castle was gorgous! My wife wants to go back to Ireland just for this place.

Chris Scully on Mon Dec 1 2008

The dogs that greeted us and who live on the property were fantastic! We really enjoyed the food but it was a little pricey and dinner was limited to a 5 course meal.

Patrick Patton on Mon Nov 24 2008

Absolutely fabulous!

Anne Safrath on Fri Nov 14 2008

This castle is truly Grand in every sense of the word. It was the biggest room and bathroom we had the whole vacation. We walked every inch of it and the whole place is just beautiful and amazing.

Sandy Addie on Fri Oct 17 2008

Can tell lots of work was being done. The Ivy from the images was all down for restuckoing the exterior. Some nice walking trails would have been nice also. All in all a great place though.

Kevin Brooks on Tue Oct 14 2008

Our host at Ballyseede Castle was extremely accommodating. She answered our questions and offered places to eat at our next destination. The staff was very attentive, the food excellent and we really enjoyed our night there.

Cheryl Schmidt on Fri Oct 10 2008

The Castle was fantastic. Accomodations were beautiful and the owner made a point to make sure we had a tour and were taken care of even though he had a large wedding the same night we were there. Loved the dogs, loved the experiece.

Tammy Carmichael on Tue Sep 30 2008

After a few problems which we got resolved and we were all settled we enjoyed our stay there. They had coin operated internet and let my sister use their phone when she lost her wallet and had to sort that out. The dogs were a highlight for all of us. We loved Arthur and Einstein who added loads of personality to the place that otherwise might seem cold and formal.

Brenda Story on Sun Sep 21 2008

There was an all night wedding going on and was somewhat noisy; overall exceptional

Dan Polaski on Wed Aug 13 2008

just loved it!

Colleen Seiter on Sun Jul 20 2008

The old part of the castle was nice, but we stayed in the "new" part that had been added, so this was not a true castle experience. The bar is nice but too small, and the grounds are nice but too small to take a good walk. The people (and dogs) were nice.

Griffin Americas on Wed Jul 16 2008

Wonderful!! Loved the dog, Arthur. Beautiful grounds!

Paulette Fitzgerald on Tue Jul 15 2008

GREAT EVERYTHING EVEN ARTHUR!!!!!!!

Joy Horn on Tue Jul 15 2008

This was one of our favorites!!! Everyone was so nice and the service was great. Our room was beautiful!!!

Cathy Devine on Tue Jul 15 2008

Loved it.

Jo Anne Werner on Tue Jul 8 2008

Evening meal was quite expensive so we did not eat there. Breakfast was quite nice.

Sheila Merrigan on Wed Jul 2 2008

Lovely Castle. Loved the room, the grounds and the service.

Mark Miorelli on Mon Jun 16 2008

Looks are not everything. The staff was hard to find, not there when we checked in, gave us double beds on our honeymoon, got a new room w/ one bed, & was a lot smaller. Staff not located in the bar, had to hunt them down, while it had neat decorations i would not recommend it to anyone. Service means everything.

William Hughes on Sun Jun 15 2008

Wonderful experince, cute fun dogs in the lobby (Irish Wolfhound) The only down part was no elevator and we stayed on the 4th floor. But still well worth it. I would advise people needing accommodations without elevators be advised.

Mary Mckinlay on Sun Jun 1 2008

Ballyseede was our first Castle stop and a welcome interlude to three nights in a B&B. In both castles we ate in the main dining room. Food is quite expensive in Ireland compared to the US, but the extravagence was worth it.

Kenneth Miller on Fri May 30 2008

Without a doubt the best of all the places we stayed that week. Liza, who was managing the hotel the day we were there was really someone special. She really knows how to make you feel at home, comfortable, and special all at the same time. Loved it, loved it, loved it!

Margo Gibson on Tue May 20 2008

Everything about this experience was great.

Jaqueline Freitag on Mon May 19 2008

The grounds were stunning but the interior was quite in need of refurbishing. Although it was clean, the blanket on the bed was well worn. Einstein, the resident pit mix, appeared to have been bestowed with all the personality in the house. He gave us a lively greeting when we arrived and an animated goodbye when we left. The lady in charge of checking us in was dour rather than welcoming and the one setting up the breakfast buffet appeared harried and put out by the whole thing. This was the only time in the whole 13 days that we felt less than welcome. The meal in the dining room was the best we had while we were in Ireland.

Marge Doherty on Wed Apr 30 2008

Not easy to find

Babette Burleigh on Sun Apr 27 2008

It stands out as the most comfortable place we stayed. Staff was exceptional, including Arthur.

Mrs Kathy Thierfeldt on Tue Apr 22 2008

A bit expensive and chilly. Again, lovely facility and staff. Room was really cold regardless of temp we set the radiator at -- alas. Wonderful large bathroom after the B&B bathrooms we'd had. Didn't eat there, just breakfast and a couple of drinks in the bar.

Robert Johnson on Tue Apr 1 2008

We loved Ballyseede and would have preferred to be there 2 nights vs the one.

Maureen Fahey on Mon Jan 14 2008

Very pleasent stay, employees treated us like family.

Ben Marino on Mon Dec 17 2007

The location was OK and our room smelled like smoke. The staff was very friendly.

Margaret Schumann on Wed Dec 12 2007

There was a mix up regarding our rooms, but Lisa corrected the situation and was very accomodating. We enjoyed our stay there.

Nancy Grady on Sat Nov 24 2007

very difficult to find

Cathryn Creswell on Mon Oct 15 2007

It was quite an experience. I loved staying in a castle. The people in charge & the guests were very friendly. I would definitely recommend this castle as a place to stay.

Mary Ann Tuccori on Mon Oct 15 2007

Overall, very good. There were bugs in room on ceilings that had nested there. One room had at least 3 bees buzzing around. Felt the rooms should have been checked ahead of time and that the bugs in place had been there for some time.

Marilyn Leonard on Wed Oct 10 2007

This was the best castle we loved it and can't wait to come back . Everyone there was just wonderful.

Angela Schmidt on Wed Sep 26 2007

absolutely fabulous.room perfect.service second to none.staff very helpfull.food excellent.would love to stay again.

Carl Nixon on Fri Sep 7 2007

The hotel itself was beautiful and the room was really nice (and large). Unfortunately there was a funeral party that had taken over the hotel the day we arrived, so if we tried to eat in the restauraunt or drink in the bar, we were met with saved chairs or a general feeling that you were not welcome because you were not part of the funeral group. Not the hotel's fault- but they could have done more to make the other guests feel a little more welcome.

Lauren Heaney on Mon Aug 20 2007

It was one of the highlights of stay.

Kevin Hensley on Thu Aug 9 2007

We found there was nowhere to take a walk around the grounds. Also, when you checked in, no one was there to greet you and throughout the stay it was very hard to find someone to help you. The laundry service was horrible. Everything came back rolled in balls, wrinkled and stuffed back in the plastic laundry bags. We had to iron all the shirts and blouses out at our next stop, which we were not happy about. Also, several shirts came back with stains on them and they still have not come out.

Pauline Newcomb on Tue Aug 7 2007

We are unable to comment on "value" because we were not separately billed for the castle, so don't know how much of our total package cost is allocable to it. The castle was an extraordinary start for our holiday. Our accommodation was large and elegantly furnished, and the staff were all friendly and helpful.

Norman Kiger on Thu Jun 28 2007

We loved the castle but it was a bit hard to find. Some directions would have been helpful. The room and grounds were beautiful. We were in the car all day so decided to eat dinner at the hotel and found the meal and service excellent. We had a lovely evening. Service was excellent.

Frances Koontz on Tue Jun 26 2007

This was the most delightful stay of our trip. Very special old house, excellant food, wonderful grounds and great dog. What more could a traveler ask for?

Joy Swartz on Sun Jun 24 2007

Great property, lots of culture. Watch-out- No Lift

John Barker on Thu May 31 2007

Ballyseede was a treasure. They were rehabbing one section and setting up the gardens, but none of this work took away from its charm. I left a bit of my heart at Ballyseede with Arthur, their resident wolfhound. Our room was beautiful and spacious. They spoiled us with the food and it's in a wonderful location that is great for driving and visiting on daytrips. STAY HERE. It was a wonderful experience and we are definitely going back.

Angela Schardan on Thu May 17 2007

Good castle feel......

Bridie Tamer on Mon Dec 18 2006

A very charming castle, great taste in the choice of furniture. Lovely and warm dining room with fireplace.

Alice Moio on Wed Dec 13 2006

Beautiful castle outside of Tralee town, charming dining area and large rooms. exceptional welcome and service.

Elaine Fitzpatrick on Wed Dec 13 2006

I was a little concerned about this one, not seeing it very often mentioned in lists of castle hotels, but it was wonderful. We loved the Yeats room, it had beautiful antiques, and a tub and heating element for warming towels or heating washed clothes. I had to go to the dr. the first morning after arriving, and our luggage was not at the airport when we arrived, but the management let us use a voucher and stay another night, because of those difficulties. We did have our luggage delivered the second day, and everyone was very helpful and friendly. I'm afraid this place spoiled us for the rest of the trip, but it was just what we needed at the time. Thank you.

Nancy Brown on Wed Nov 29 2006

The service was first class. The accomodations were excellent.

Pat Finley on Tue Nov 28 2006

Very nice

Mike Mcneil on Thu Oct 26 2006

In spite of our complaint about the quality of my dinner, nothing happened, not even an excuse was offered. The building site on one part of the castle marred the beautiful sight.

Kurt Kabbe on Thu Oct 12 2006

What a great experience this was! I had always wanted to stay in a castle and this far exceeded my expectations.

David Solomon on Thu Oct 5 2006

A very nice, but tired, property. I would, however, recommend it. Unfortunately, the manager was away at the races and the addage "While the cats away, the mice will play" was certainly applicable to the bar staff. Besides being loud, vulgar and rude to guests, the friends of the bartender did appear to enjoy a few beers "on the house".

Albert Windham on Sat Sep 9 2006

Perfection. The 5-course dinner was excellent. This was a favorite spot for us.

Joann Miller on Wed Aug 16 2006

Lovely building in need of much exterior repair. No facilities, per se. Staff was charming. Horrid Muzak system in bar and restaurant... Johnny Cash, Madonna and Tony Bennet???

Jim Cameron on Tue Aug 15 2006

Good size rooms with a lovely cosy bar and impressive dining room.

Paul O'Brien on Thu Feb 23 2006

The bathrooms weren't very clean for such a luxuriou hotel !

Carole Razet on Thu Feb 23 2006

This castle is surrounded by nature and is would recommend it to all who want to relax and like quiete places.

Amela Cardaklija on Wed Feb 22 2006

It was fine with the exception of there was a dog under our window that barked all night long.
