Both times we went in mid to late March. In 2007 weather was cool and misty, but we loved it. In 2009, it was actually quite nice, fairly warm and mostly sunny. We never fought tourists or tourist busses. There were a few attractions not open but I would definitely recommend going in March. You don't go to Ireland for beach weather; you go for the absolute beauty and magic of the island. My family and I have been to Ireland twice: in 2007 and 2009. July can be much warmer yes but also can be wet. 2010 was a glorious Summer but we recognize that people don't come to Ireland for the weather so we find that September gives a good balance of decent weather and less crowds.
