Born Nicholas Christopher Michael Ring but better known as Christy, was arguably the best hurler ever to have lived. He represented his club and county at the highest level throughout a senior career that lasted 27 years and saw him score 33 goals and 208 points in 64 games representing Cork. He retired from intercounty hurling in 1963 and from club hurling in 1967. Christy was the first ever player to win 8 all-Ireland senior medals on the fireld of play, a feat that has never been exceeded.
