Clones

The movie director Neil Jordan once said of the town, "If I want to quantify anything, I measure it against Clones. There is nothing you will ever encounter in life that you haven't seen in some form in Clones."

This County Monaghan town obviously made a huge impression on the film director, Neil Jordan. The director of such box office hits as Michael Collins and The Crying Game, portrayed the town in his film "The Butcher Boy" which was written by Clones author Patrick McCabe. This County Monaghan town is also home to the famous boxer Barry McGuigan.

Not so long ago, the town was experiencing economic hardship due partly to the enforced closures of the roads linking the town to its neighbours in the North. However Clones has turned around and is now proud to present itself as a destination for the visitor to the region.

A golf course with a difference can be found 3 miles from the town. An enjoyable setting in which to play adds to the appeal of this amenity. It is currently being extended from a 9-hole to an 18-hole course and also offers a full bar and restaurant.

Approximately 60 lakes within a 5 miles radius of the town ensure that the visiting fishermen will have a wealth of locations to choose from. Similarly, walking enthusiasts will find many walks within the Drumlin Belt - the area of lakes, hills and rivers in which Clones lies. The varying altitudes reveal an interesting range of views over the surrounding land.

A surprising number of pubs and hotels occupy this small town. You should not have any problem finding somewhere to rest your head, or a pint!
