Clontarf Castle

Tucked away in suburban Dublin, two miles from the city centre and five from Dublin Airport, Clontarf Castle Hotel is a relaxing retreat set around a mock Victorian castle.

Dating back to 1172, Clontarf Castle was built by the Norman adventurer Hugh de Lacy, though the area is recorded in earlier Irish History for the famous Battle of Clontarf which saw the victory, but demise of Ireland's last High King Brian Boru, in 1014.
The castle today was completely rebuilt in 1837 and opened as a four star hotel in 1998.

A charming castellated tower and manor house, Clontarf Castle Hotel provides a good balance of business and leisure just two miles from the centre of Dublin. The hotel has an excellent selection of bedrooms and luxurious suites, tastefully furnished with a traditional Irish theme, each room has large beds and is fully equipped with all the modern essentials.

The facilities at Clontarf Castle include the Fahrenheit Grill with chandeliers and pewter goblets, serving modern European cuisine and using the finest Irish produce, in particular fresh seafood landed locally. The hotel also has two atmospheric and friendly bars, the contemporary styled Ìndigo Lounge and the stylish and traditional Knights Bar, with nightly entertainment. The Indigo Lounge with red chandeliers, stylish glassware and individual style seating is a setting like no other. The Knights Bar is located in the original castle building and showcases a dramatic ceiling, huge open fire places and atmospheric stained glass windows.

Clontarf Castle also has a gymnasium and access to a local leisure centre, while the hotel is close to renowned golf courses at St Ann's and Royal Dublin . And with the city centre only two miles away; Clontarf Castle is within accessible distance to Dublin's busy shops, famous sights and bustling nightlife.

Just okay - commercial with very little charm. The staff was friendly enough, but they told us they could get us a dinner reservation, then couldn't - they got us one the next night, but there was a wedding party at our reservation time so we had to wait until that was over. Poor advice for seeing Dublin. The "Red Bus" picks you up, but no one says that you have to take city buses to get back. Food was okay. Some nice old touches around the building.

Loved our stay here also. It was a bit of a long walk to outside restaurants but we did not mind. The concierge was fantastic! He was always checking on you if you were in the lobby making sure you had an enjoyable stay.

Jule Patterson on Fri Jun 24 2011

This was a great place to stay we loved our room and the close proximity to Dublin was great.

David Puckett on Sun May 29 2011

Wonderful stay. Only issue was a wedding reception that involved a loud band playing until 12:30am that was heard all over the wing we were assigned to on a Thursday evening. Otherwise lovely.

The breakfast menu was basically the same with the B&Bs. I was expect something more at the Clontarf Castle (since VIPs stayed in this place). Most of the B&Bs I stayed were just as good or better than Clontarf Castle's buffet breakfast. This was a nice treat at the end of my vacation. I didn't realize the high standard/quality of the Clontarf Castle until the day before when I read more about it in one of my tour books. Thanks.

Ray Abella on Wed Mar 30 2011

Truely, majestic

Lisa Rajnik on Wed Dec 15 2010

We thought the room would be a little bigger, but other than that, everything was absolutely wonderful!

Ms Jennifer Lewis on Sat Dec 11 2010

The breakfast was ok, but not as near as good as the B&Bs were.

Ruth Mercer on Thu Dec 9 2010

It was difficult to find.

Andy Gothreau on Thu Nov 18 2010

We did not receive our breakfast in our room as we requested. The order was never even taken off of the door. And prior to us ordering in this manner, we checked with the front desk to see if we could and were assured that it would be delivered on time if we placed our order on the form and hung it out on the door.

Amanda Mccorkle on Tue Nov 9 2010

This was a perfect way to start our vacation

Emilie Schofield on Wed Oct 27 2010

This was the last hotel on our trip and we were very disappointed. All of the other hotels and service at the hotels were great, but the rooms here were very cramped, we did not receive good service and the location was too far from Dublin city center.

Mr Robert Adams on Sat Oct 16 2010

Hard to Gond, but was upgraded to a suite that was excellent!

Roger Turner on Sun Sep 19 2010

This hotel was difficult to find but with the new roadways our GPS system from the rental car company was not up to date and this complicated finding this location.

Mr William Hogan on Tue Sep 14 2010

This was WONDERFUL and just what we needed on our last night in Ireland. The room was exceptional and the staff was ever so helpful and friendly. If I come back to Dublin, I will definitely stay at Clontarf Castle!!!!!

Sharon Raymer on Tue Sep 14 2010

I can not begin to say how much we enjoyed our stay at the Clontarf Castle. Clontarf Castle was our last night in Dublin. And our stay here was wonderful. I am glad we saved the best for last.

Theresa Relyea on Thu Sep 9 2010

This was our least favorite

Maureen Ryan on Mon Jul 26 2010

Wonderful experience at this castle with a little bit of old and new. People were very hospitable and accomodating. We arrived late and did not know the dinner hours but the kitchen still provided us w/ appetizer type foods. I learned to drink and like beer w/ my first shandy here.

Pam Sullivan on Fri Jul 9 2010

The staff was very nice and helpful, the castle was great, bedroom was clean and the bed was very soft and comfortable, able to catch a bus right outside the hotel

Traci Bell on Mon Jun 21 2010

We all had a good time at Clontarf, but a wedding was underway and most of the hotel facilities had been reserved by the wedding party. There were no dining facilities available and we ended up having to take room service. However, the staff at Clontarf were extremely apologetic on the matter and provided the room service free of charge. It's hard to argue for any thing bad when there's no charge. The Clontarf staff was obviously overwhelmed with the demands of the wedding party, but they still managed to be kind and hospitable; a tribute to their very good multi-tasking skills.

Frank Johnson on Thu Jun 17 2010

As great as we had hoped. Would love to come back and stay. Again, very helpful with bus schedules and anything we wished for. Fabulous!!

Sandra Hamel on Mon Jun 14 2010

Loved this hotel. Quiet neighborhood with sea promenade close by. Had everything we needed. Staff was helpful. Glad we stayed 2 nights.

Patricia Burg on Sun May 30 2010

Tricky to drive to, but great once we got there!

Michael Shoup on Mon May 24 2010

It was not as easy to find as I had hoped, but not bad. The place was excellent and the people likewise. And oh the bed was so comfortable. We did not want to leave. We were able to park there and take the city bus, which stops outside the castle, into Dublin. I would definetly stay here again.

Stella Mccall on Thu Apr 8 2010

The Castle was beautiful and we enjoyed it immensely! Very helpful and friendly!

Helen Frobose on Tue Mar 30 2010

We had difficulty finding the castle. Because of jet lag, we slept through breakfast.

Priscilla Crawford on Sat Mar 27 2010

Very nice, clean, good food and drink and exceptional staff. Wonderful!!

Margaret Kennard on Tue Mar 23 2010

This was a very nice hotel. I was happy to see an American outlet so I could plug in one of my electronics! The staff was very helpful and friendly and helped us with our baggage to our room. We also dined in the restaurant and were pleasantly surprised when they sent a free dessert congratulating us on our marriage. Very central to the airport too.

Jaime Hunter on Tue Feb 23 2010

The hotel was very nice, and the rooms were modern and very clean! The only downside was the distance from the city center. Overall, a good experience.

Kristyn Danson on Mon Feb 22 2010

Really beautiful place to stay. I was very surprised how modern the rooms were.

Nichole Taylor on Tue Feb 16 2010

The hotel was nice and the staff was very helpful but I had informed my agent that we would be returning our rental car and would need to be close to the city center during our days in Dublin-- it was over an hour walk to the city center and the buses were running on a holiday schedule-- so it was not very convenient and added a cost to our budget for transportation. The breakfast was very good but the bar food was uneven-- some good, some not so good. I think we would have been happier in the city.

Caitlin Mcfarland on Mon Jan 4 2010

Great time. Flet like we were Kings and Queens.

Leonard Byrne on Mon Nov 30 2009

Clontarf Castle is a contemporary hotel and little remains of the original castle. The reason for the three stars is becasue our room was very small and sterile looking (no window view). You could actually be in bed and reach out and touch the walls. The bath looked industrial with fire block walls and there was only two towels, one in the bath and the other in the wardrobe. I'm glad we only stayed one day there. If you're looking for a real castle experience Clontarf is not the place to stay. On a positive note, the staff were very kind.

Anna Accardo Marks on Mon Nov 23 2009

Beautiful place to stay.

Nichole Taylor on Tue Nov 17 2009

Fantastic hotel.

Katie Mcnaught on Tue Nov 17 2009

We were so delighted with this hotel. We loved it and everyone was helpful. We had arrived early A.M. from the U.S.A. and they let us check in and get a couple of hours of sleep before they gave us directions to tour the center of Dublin. Loved it.

Linda Starr on Fri Nov 13 2009

Good stop to end our trip. Didn't feel like a castle but a modernized hotel to look like a castle. Still a good place to end and I'm glad it was our last stop since the airport was very close. Also they had the best in room entertainment package, 9.99 euro for 24 hour access to all in room entertainment. By far the most generous offer I have ever seen.

Scott Hamlin on Wed Nov 11 2009

We were extremely pleased with the Clontarf Castle but had trouble locating it.

Mary Brannon on Mon Oct 19 2009

Very nice rooms

Casey Pettersen on Mon Oct 12 2009

Disappointed in location.Very busy with a wedding that was about to take place. No view from our Room Bar/restaurant was great. Beds on wheels - weird!

Christina Kelly on Tue Oct 6 2009

Nice place to stay, but more like a modern hotel than a castle.

Crystal Pour on Mon Oct 5 2009

Wonderful!

Colleen Heenan on Wed Sep 30 2009

Great place great service, the wait staff in the restaurant spectacular. The Wait staff in the casual restaurant need some friendliness training.

William Wylie on Mon Sep 28 2009

GOOD CHOICE...

Cloyd Tucker on Wed Sep 23 2009

Very nice hotel ...but still a hotel ...it had all the comforts of home and made a great last night in Ireland.

Philip Mcmahan on Wed Sep 23 2009

Great place.

Charlotte Faddis on Mon Sep 21 2009

We enjoyed Clontarf Castle very much. Being our first stop upon arrival, we had some difficulty navigating around Dublin. Thankfully, we headed south the next day and began to learn about traffic signs (or the lack thereof) and how to get around.

Tom Schuetz on Mon Sep 21 2009

The Castle was awesome but a little bit too far from the airport and Dublin for our liking. The taxi cost to get to the hotel was expensive. If they offered a shuttle it would have been perfect!

Carrie Sumrall on Tue Sep 15 2009

The only problem we had was the Clontarf Castle overbooked. At first they wanted to move us to one of their sister hotels. However, another group voluntered to move to the sister hotel. The manager in charge was extremely helpful in assuring that we were accomodated. In fact, she gave us the Royal Suite.

Thomas Williamson on Wed Sep 9 2009

This was the nicest room we had and the food was excellent. They were very helpful about getting our flight boarding passes for us and arranging transportation to the airport.

Doug Lucas on Fri Sep 4 2009

It was a great place to stay on our last night, It would have been a great place to start our trip too

Sondra Gumucio on Fri Sep 4 2009

Great hotel.

Marjorie Wallace on Tue Aug 25 2009

Great food and beverage, however the room was very, very small. I thought we had booked a bigger room.

Jake Massey on Mon Aug 17 2009

This facility provided excellent service. The room was great. I would recommend this hotel.

Joshua Follick on Thu Aug 13 2009

Loved the castle. Accommodations were wonderful as were the staff. Everyone was friendly and ready to help. Would stay there again!

Maureen Jillisky on Thu Aug 6 2009

Clontarf Castle was one of our favorite places to stay. The staff was extremely helpful, and our room was beautiful and well-equipped.

Susan O'Brien on Sat Jul 25 2009

Although we arrived at 1pm we did not get a room until 2:20pm. We asked to use a phone to contact a friend in Dublin while we waited, and was told to walk about 5 mins to a nearest payphone. They stated that there was no payphone in the hotel and did not offer a courtesy phone.

Susan Mainprize on Wed Jul 8 2009

Great Hotel in Dublin. First class

Jack Black on Mon Jun 29 2009

Great location for early morning drive to airport.

Gail Dobbs on Sat Jun 20 2009

Only problem is wedding receptions very loud. Fire alrm was pulled by a prankster at 4 a.m.

Daniel Dugan on Thu Jun 11 2009

fantatic place..staff extremely helpful..

Linda Graniero on Mon Oct 13 2008

Clontarf was chosen as a close location to the airport. It was much nicer than staying in a "chain-like" hotel. We were only there to sleep and have a small bite to eat.

Patricia Lang on Mon Sep 22 2008

This was a great location for our final night as it provided easy access to the airport. The accomdations were very comfortable and there were two places to dine within the hotel. Dublin was a bus ride away if we had decided to re-visit the city. Our only complaint was that it was difficult to find and we ended up driving through Dublin and the port area on a busy Friday afternoon. On arrival at the hotel all stresses were eliminated by the kind and wonderful front desk personnel, Geraldine. We have travelled around the world over the last 24 years and have never met someone so genuine and kind behind the front desk of a hotel as Geraldine. Geraldine is the type of person all hotels should be in search of. She should be commended for her attention to detail and her willingness to go out of her way for her guests. We found the people throughout Ireland to be friendly, but Geraldine was the icing on the top of the cake. What a lovely last impression of Ireland!

Fiona Harrower on Sun Aug 10 2008

Clontarf was very nice. We spent very little time there, though, wanting to spend as much time in Dublin on our last day as possible.

Betty Westrope on Tue Jul 1 2008

This was our first hotel/castle. This was really hard to find, no one took us to our room, nor showed us how to work the air or lights (must use your key to get the lights to work), woke up to a recycling of glass the first morning & didnt get our wake up call the 2nd morning (good thing our flight was not very early). This was too modern, not the castle feel at all that we were going for.

William Hughes on Sun Jun 15 2008

A nearby college was having graduation ceremonies at the hotel when we arrived. We had some difficulty finding a place to sit down and eat, but finally found a place at the bar. Food was good and the hotel is very interesting. The room was excellent. The breakfast was also very good. We could have stayed closer to the airport for the last night as the traffic was quite heavy in the morning. I did not drive the automobile to the Castle but dropped it off Tuesday late afternoon. We took a cab to the hotel and back to the airport on Wednesday morning. I am pleased with that choice as I would have had some difficulty with the heavy traffic. The cabdrivers took some interesting detours and of course, they can use the bus lanes to get us to the hotel and back to the airport. For a last night in Ireland, a more convenient hotel would have worked. We did love the hotel however.

Kenneth Miller on Fri May 30 2008

The room was small however the desk person was very helpful.

Jaqueline Freitag on Mon May 19 2008

Hard to find the street where they are located, with everyone was driving on the wrong side of street.

Mrs Kathy Thierfeldt on Tue Apr 22 2008

Great way to end the trip!

Adriana Del Vescovo on Tue Sep 25 2007

When we initially arrived at Clontarf, we were informed that we no longer had a room, that arrangements had been made for us to stay at the Radison airport also a 4 star. My husband said he would not stay at the Radison and if had to be re-located would want to be near City Centre where more activity. I also indicated I would call myguideireland and provided the confirmation as well as phone # as these arrangements had been made before our departure from the states. After sitting for some time, while they were making phone calls, we were told that there 'just happened' to have a cancellation. Such should never had occurred; the result was one of resolution, yet just want you to be aware this happened. There was a large party there, so perhaps they had 'double-bookied'?

Susan Griffin Jr on Tue Sep 18 2007

The room was large and open. The handicapped room bathroom shower encasing was very difficult to access/exit by someone using a wheelchair. Should consider removing and using a curtain only. Bathroom sink was difficult to use since there was an undercasing that prevented a wheelchair from accessing straight on. This is a common issue at all the hotels I stayed at. Should consider raising the accessible room sink and removing the undercasing and wrapping insulation on pipes instead placing them close to wall. Bathroom door should open out instead of in for easier access (Another common issue at all hotels offering handicapped rooms). The staff was extremely friendly and helpful.

Tim Donovan on Tue Jul 10 2007

The Clontarf Castle was beautiful! The exterior and interior of the castle was absolutely gorgeous. We found the staff very nice and helpful. The room was wonderful. It tastfully decorated, and the bed was extremely comfortable. The breakfast was delicious, and we were spoiled by the variety. We highly recommend the Clontarf Castle to all!

Chris Sowada on Wed Jun 27 2007

Loved it. We have a wonderful time there, thought it was amazing and it was - a whole lot more than we ever expected. They were so nice and helpful.! AWESOME PLACE.

Diane Greenfield on Tue Jun 26 2007

I hope you already read my e-mail regarding the Clontarf "Castle".

Darlene Bledsoe on Mon May 14 2007

I don't think that this property was regarded very well by the fam group, but I believe that American Guests will like it. Decor seemed sharp and stylish, rooms of a good 4 star quality. Staff moving furniture (especially via elevators) and leaving it in public areas should not be done. Liked the bar and restaurant facilities, seemed 'inviting'.

Sean Kelly on Thu Dec 14 2006

Restaurant was being remodeled, so the dinner was in the bar/lounge with a very limited menu

Tom Crooks on Wed Nov 1 2006

bar waitress did not know what a martinee was, which makes me think they have few customers ordering mixed drinks..location was hard for us to find, but the hotel was very nice.

Nancy Avila on Tue Oct 24 2006

Very nice hotel - the staff was incredibly helpful and friendly. The food was very good. It was a little further outside the city centre than we had thought, but all-in-all it was a wonderful start to our vacation.

Raymond Ryan on Fri Sep 29 2006

Expected more of a castle after staying at Glin Castle.
