Clontarf Castle

Tucked away in suburban Dublin, two miles from the city centre and five from Dublin Airport, Clontarf Castle Hotel is a relaxing retreat set around a mock Victorian castle.

Dating back to 1172, Clontarf Castle was built by the Norman adventurer Hugh de Lacy, though the area is recorded in earlier Irish History for the famous Battle of Clontarf which saw the victory, but demise of Ireland's last High King Brian Boru, in 1014. The castle today was completely rebuilt in 1837 and opened as a four star hotel in 1998.

A charming castellated tower and manor house, Clontarf Castle Hotel provides a good balance of business and leisure just two miles from the centre of Dublin. The hotel has an excellent selection of bedrooms and luxurious suites, tastefully furnished with a traditional Irish theme, each room has large beds and is fully equipped with all the modern essentials.

The facilities at Clontarf Castle include the medieval themed Templar's Bistro with chandeliers and pewter goblets, serving modern European cuisine and using the finest Irish produce, in particular fresh seafood landed locally. The hotel also has two atmospheric and friendly bars, the contemporary styled Drawbridge and the stylish and traditional Knights Bar, with nightly entertainments.

Clontarf Castle also has a gymnasium and access to a local leisure centre, while the hotel is close to renowned golf courses at St Ann's and Royal Dublin. And with the city centre only two miles away; Clontarf Castle is within accessible distance to Dublin's busy shops, famous sights and bustling nightlife.

Guest Reviews of Clontarf Castle

fantatic place..staff extremely helpful..

Clontarf was chosen as a close location to the airport. It was much nicer than staying in a "chain-like" hotel. We were only there to sleep and have a small bite to eat.

This was a great location for our final night as it provided easy access to the airport. The accomdations were very comfortable and there were two places to dine within the hotel. Dublin was a bus ride away if we had decided to re-visit the city. Our only complaint was that it was difficult to find and we ended up driving through Dublin and the port area on a busy Friday afternoon. On arrival at the hotel all stresses were eliminated by the kind and wonderful front desk personnel, Geraldine. We have travelled around the world over the last 24 years and have never met someone so genuine and kind behind the front desk of a hotel as Geraldine. Geraldine is the type of person all hotels should be in search of. She should be commended for her attention to detail and her willingness to go out of her way for her guests. We found the people throughout Ireland to be friendly, but Geraldine was the icing on the top of the cake. What a lovely last impression of Ireland!

Clontarf was very nice. We spent very little time there, though, wanting to spend as much time in Dublin on our last day as possible.

This was our first hotel/castle. This was really hard to find, no one took us to our room, nor showed us how to work the air or lights (must use your key to get the lights to work), woke up to a recycling of glass the first morning & didnt get our wake up call the 2nd morning (good thing our flight was not very early). This was too modern, not the castle feel at all that we were going for.

A nearby college was having graduation ceremonies at the hotel when we arrived. We had some difficulty finding a place to sit down and eat, but finally found a place at the bar. Food was good and the hotel is very interesting. The room was excellent. The breakfast was also very good. We could have stayed closer to the airport for the last night as the traffic was quite heavy in the morning. I did not drive the automobile to the Castle but dropped it off Tuesday late afternoon. We took a cab to the hotel and back to the airport on Wednesday morning. I am pleased with that choice as I would have had some difficulty with the heavy traffic. The cabdrivers took some interesting detours and of course, they can use the bus lanes to get us to the hotel and back to the airport. For a last night in Ireland, a more convenient hotel would have worked. We did love the hotel however.

The room was small however the desk person was very helpful.

Hard to find the street where they are located, with everyone was driving on the wrong side of street.

Great way to end the trip!

When we initially arrived at Clontarf, we were informed that we no longer had a room, that arrangements had been made for us to stay at the Radison airport also a 4 star. My husband said he would not stay at the Radison and if had to be re-located would want to be near City Centre where more activity. I also indicated I would call myguideireland and provided the confirmation as well as phone # as these arrangements had been made before our departure from the states. After sitting for some time, while they were making phone calls, we were told that there 'just happened' to have a cancellation. Such should never had occurred; the result was one of resolution, yet just want you to be aware this happened. There was a large party there, so perhaps they had 'double-bookied'?

The room was large and open. The handicapped room bathroom shower encasing was very difficult to access/exit by someone using a wheelchair. Should consider removing and using a curtain only. Bathroom sink was difficult to use since there was an undercasing that prevented a wheelchair from accessing straight on. This is a common issue at all the hotels I stayed at. Should consider raising the accessible room sink and removing the undercasing and wrapping insulation on pipes instead placing them close to wall. Bathroom door should open out instead of in for easier access (Another common issue at all hotels offering handicapped rooms). The staff was extremely friendly and helpful.

The Clontarf Castle was beautiful! The exterior and interior of the castle was absolutely gorgeous. We found the staff very nice and helpful. The room was wonderful. It tastfully decorated, and the bed was extremely comfortable. The breakfast was delicious, and we were spoiled by the variety. We highly recommend the Clontarf Castle to all!

Loved it. We have a wonderful time there, thought it was amazing and it was - a whole lot more than we ever expected. They were so nice and helpful.! AWESOME PLACE.

I hope you already read my e-mail regarding the Clontarf "Castle".

I don't think that this property was regarded very well by the fam group, but I believe that American Guests will like it. Decor seemed sharp and stylish, rooms of a good 4 star quality. Staff moving furniture (especially via elevators) and leaving it in public areas should not be done. Liked the bar and restaurant facilities, seemed 'inviting'.

Restaurant was being remodeled, so the dinner was in the bar/lounge with a very limited menu

Tom Crooks on Wed Nov 1 2006

bar waitress did not know what a martinee was, which makes me think they have few customers ordering mixed drinks..location was hard for us to find, but the hotel was very nice.

Nancy Avila on Tue Oct 24 2006

Very nice hotel - the staff was incredibly helpful and friendly. The food was very good. It was a little further outside the city centre than we had thought, but all-in-all it was a wonderful start to our vacation.

Expected more of a castle after staying at Glin Castle.
