Dromoland Castle

One of the top luxury hotels of the world, Dromoland Castle in Co. Clare, dates back to the 16th Century and is the ancestral home of the O'Brien clan, direct descendants of the last High King of Ireland; Brian Boru.

Dromoland is one of the most romantic and picturesque castles you will find, with a rich depth of history going back to the Gaelic Irish royalty of old. Set within a private estate, Dromoland Castle is one of Ireland's and the world's finest hotels and has played hosts to Princes and Presidents, including George W Bush on his recent visit to Ireland.

As you'd expect Dromoland offers the utmost in luxury, blending old world elegance with modern day comforts and a complete range of facilities, activities and services. Priceless reminders of Dromoland's history can be found throughout the castle, furnished with fine antiques, splendid wood and stone carvings and original oil paintings. Each of the fabulously appointed guest rooms have been individually designed with meticulous detail, enjoying the finest of furnishings mixing old world charm with very modern amenities and each has magical views across Dromoland's grounds.

Dromoland's award-winning Earl of Thomond Restaurant offers a relaxed but elegant gastronomic experience. Considered one of the finest restaurants in Ireland, its menu is renowned for its creativity and its culinary excellence is complimented by a fine selection of wines. While the Fig Tree Restaurant offers a less formal approach and the Castle Library is the perfect setting for a Cocktail Bar, with gently burning log fire, candlelit in the evening and hosting Irish Ballads, providing the background for after dinner drinks.

Dromoland Castle offers a huge selection of activities. Surrounding the Castle is Dromoland's 18-hole parkland golf course, while the castles other sporting pursuits include fishing, horse riding, archery and clay pigeon shooting.

Nearby are the popular visitor attractions of Bunratty Castle & Folk Park, the Cliffs of Moher and the scenic beauty of the Burren, while Dromoland Castle is just 8 miles from Shannon Airport.

Again the castle and grounds were nice but getting there was not a breeze however this one was easier thanthe others due to it's location.

At check out waited over 30 minutes and 2 phone calls before we pulled our 50 lb. bags up and down about fifteen steps before getting to the lobby. Not what I think of as a 5 star hotel.

Beautiful Castle and great friendly bartenders. Wish we could have spent more time there.

Debra And Riley Parker on Tue Jun 3 2008

Love that we had internet with the TV in our room, to check our emails.

The best. Had we known more about this hotel, it might have been a choice for a longer visit. The staff, accommodations etc. were all far beyond what we thought we would get.

We took my wife's parents to Dromoland as an anniversary present & they were blown away. Like Ashford it is a world-class hotel...and the added bonus is a great golf course which is a serious test of skill. We had dinner in the hotel on the Saturday night - Fantastic. It is a pricey but it is worth it as a really special treat.

The staff at Dromoland Castle provided us with an upgrade when they learned it was our honeymoon. They gave us a lovely card, provided us with roses in our room amd made us feel as if we were the only guests to which they had to cater. It was an exceptional experience!

Beautiful.

As previously mentioned, this hotel was exceptional and all enjoyed the hotel, rooms and service. The facilities for sauna, steam, pool and spa were not in or adjacent to the Cstle but they did provide jitney service to and from the ool area and the proshop. Three of the rooms here had interior/courtyard views rather than external views that I would have expected when we set up the trip!! However, the triple was on the top floor of the newer building and was exceptional. If it were just Ruth and I we certainly would have requested a different room and having stayed at this hotel also in '98 we were disappointed in the location of the three rooms. And since I do nnot know what the payment was on a hotel by hotel basis I can't relate to anything relative to value here. A couple of the hotels, however did identify my cost per person....ie. Adare Manor, so I knew what those rooms cost. Also Aston. Now that I am back it would certainly be interesting to know what the costs were and whehter there was some cost for breakfast different than the posted full breakfast. A couple times members of the group did not eat or limited their intake to cereal and juice. This hotel was also exceptional service for dinner, reception and consierge. the on-duty consierge showed us to our rooms and was also the gal that on checkout morning called Ballynahinch for me to tell about lost items.

The most beautiful castle!!! What a lovely way to spend our last evening in Ireland. I recommend archery as an activity during the day. It was quick, but really fun.

We found Dromoland to be exquisite.

Becky Stalter on Thu Jun 22 2006

beautiful from outside, but it was not what I had expected from inside, no big entrance hall, narrow hallways, etc.

Claudia Pieper on Wed Mar 1 2006

Luxurious deluxe rooms in the castle, standard rooms in more modern wing. Five star all the way.

Paul O'Brien on Thu Feb 23 2006

A real castle !! Rooms are very spacious and very well equiped. Ideal for honey moon but very expensive for the frenchmarket.

Carole Razet on Thu Feb 23 2006

A beautiful castle with a nice view at the lake. You feel like a king or a queen there.

Amela Cardaklija on Wed Feb 22 2006

They were extremely accomadating. We arrived early to check in, we had a long flight and were honeymooners and needed to rest. They allowed us to check in early to get some rest and upgraded us because we were on our honeymoon. It was wonderful.

Erin Daniels on Mon Oct 17 2005

Wish we could have stayed longer

Robert Neville on Thu Aug 11 2005

most beautiful place I have ever stayed in

Patrick Quilty on Tue Jul 12 2005

Food, though very good, was not quite as good as expected. The 1st night we ate in the informal restaurant and the 1st part of the meal was excellent but then the waitress basically disappeared and we had to get the barman to track her down so we could get our bill. He got it but she never did reappear.
