Glenlo Abbey Hotel

Once the ancestral home of one of Galway's most illustrious families, Glenlo Abbey is a stunning 5 star hotel, harbouring the best traditions of Irish country house hotels together with some cosmopolitan themes.

Established in 1740 The Glenlo Abbey estate was home to the French family, one of Galway's famous 14 tribes. Its 138 acres of land, beside the shores of Lough Corrib, include manicured gardens and golf course, stately home, now the hotel and the fabulous 18th Century abbey.

Glenlo Abbey Hotel is a feast of sumptuous rooms laid out with classical decor and period furnishings in perfect harmony with the original features of the house. Each of the hotel's classically set bedrooms are individually decorated to the very highest of standards offering refinement, luxury and tranquillity, with sweeping views across the grounds. Some suites boast luxuriant four-poster beds and Jacuzzi baths.

Dining at Glenlo Abbey offers some truly unique experiences. Fine dining is offered in the River Room, with the very best of international cuisine set among candlelit silver service, with Lough Corrib as a backdrop. While The Pullman Restaurant offers dining on board the Orient Express, with two of its original carriages, one of which was used in the making of Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express. Maintained in their 1920's state, the carriages of the Pullman transport you back in time, while the menu reflects a blend of European and Oriental cuisine.

The Abbey itself, which is now used extensively for weddings, was built in the 1790s as a private church for the Ffrench family and features stunning stained glass art work.

The hotel can arrange a wealth of activities for guests from, golf on the 9 hole lakeside course within the grounds or practice on the 12 bay driving range to fly or course fishing on Lough Corrib.

Guest Reviews of Glenlo Abbey Hotel

Again, the main drawback was the distance from Galway. While we had view of the lake, was not impressed by it. We saw the Galway Bay Hotel, which I had inquired upon, while we were on a tour and kicked myself for not going with my own feelings on staying there. It would have been ideal for me as a photographer.

unique property which would appeal to US Guests. Tricky location as not quite in the city, not quite in Connemara. Golf course and proximity to Lough Corrib very helpful to attract Guests

Exceptional location overlooking Lough Corrib and its own golf course. Interiors are elegantly decorated and the rooms are beautifully furnished. Impressive dining room plus second dining room outside contained in old railway carriages from the Orient Express!
