Gougane Barra

Hidden away in one of Ireland's most romantic glens, on the scenic borders of County Cork and County Kerry, this is an intimate, family run hotel, set overlooking the lake of Gougane Barra and the ancient hermitage of St Finbarr.

Gougane Barra is known for its unspoilt beauty and tranquillity, but fortunately its secret isn't out just yet! The sweeping glens surrounding the Gougane Barra Lake provide the source for the River Lee, which meanders through the mountains, before reaching Cork City and the Atlantic. It was here at Gougane Barra, on an island in the lake that St Finbarr started his famous hermitage. Nearby is Ireland's first National Forest Park and the area is also an Irish speaking region or Gaeltacht.

On the shores of the lake is the Gougane Barra Hotel, which has been family run since the 19th Century and is renowned for its warmth and Irish hospitality. It's a small, intimate hotel with a homely atmosphere. The bedrooms are basic but neat and tidy and the hotel is building up a glowing reputation for its fine food, with recommendations in a number of Ireland's top dining guides.

The hotel benefits from its location amid some of Ireland's most romantic scenery. The small church built on St Finbarr's former hermitage island is a popular venue for weddings. While the surrounding unspoilt countryside is perfect for walking and cycling and guests at the hotel can take a boat out on the lake to fish for Brown Trout.

The Gougane Barra Hotel provides an excellent base for touring the scenic areas of West Cork, the Beara Peninsula and the Ring of Kerry and is accessible to the popular destinations of Cork and Killarney.

Guest Reviews for Gougane Barra

Our hotel room was very small, with an even smaller en suite. The furniture was like nursery furniture, and the shower was just a trickle.

Whilst we had an excellent lakeside room and view, we felt the room itself was a little sad and in need of a make-over. Other than this it was excellent.

An upgraded bed and breakfast, but the folk are kind, the food was good, and they had a gem of a theatre whilst we were there.

Die Ausstattung des Zimmers war sehr bescheiden. Außerdem fehlte es an zusätzlichen Decken und die Heizung war nur unzureichend.

An exceptional hotel for warmth of welcome, for stunning surroundings, for peace and quiet and for outstandingly fresh seasonal food prepared and served in the most sympathetic way possible. Get away from it all, enjoy the magnificent countryside, bring a book and relax! Fantastic!

Amazing location in a lake valley surrounded by high cliffs. Great for walking, fishing and cycling and getting away from it all. Wonderful food and friendly hospitality. Rooms and bathrooms are small but clean and freshly decorated. Recommended.

However the interior is not so well mentenanced, the location and the hospitality are very good to spend peaceful holiday.

The Gougane Barra is a nice hotel which is located in a beautiful area of West Cork. The owners are very welcoming and friendly. I would recommened it for people who like activity holidays and relexing vacations in a peaceful location, because there are lots of oppurtunities to do a walking trip and a nationalpark is nearby.

Very peaceful location with great view of lake and lovely church, best for people who want some quiet stay and who likes walking in the nature, there is a nice forest park. Nice food(best cheese cake and brown bread)and their friendliness is the great value. The building itself and room is not very special, but it is cosy and has nice view. Room6 is great, 15 is 2nd best for me. I will recommend this hotel to the women tourists or young couple for JP market. It does not suit to some guests who like luxurious type of rooms or who like to go out in the town, young teenagers who wants nightclub.
