Why did you join myguideIreland?
I always wanted to work in an English-speaking country and Ireland
has always been one of my favourite countries. Although I didn't study
tourism, cultural studies were a huge part of my studies, though it
mostly focussed on the UK. So I wanted to see for myself what Ireland
is really like. And by creating detailed itineraries for our groups
it's almost as if I am traveling with them.
What is your favourite part of Ireland?
My favourite is Connemara because it feels like a completely
different country: real mountains, lakes as smooth as glass, bogs and
heather and a bit like the end of the world. And it's only an hour's
drive from Galway City . Any part of Ireland looks amazing in the
sunshine but Connemara even looks stunning when it's misty or rainy.
What is your favourite visitor attraction?
The Slea Head drive in Dingle . It's much more scenic than the Ring
of Kerry and there are fewer coaches around so you can enjoy the
landscape in peace. You can also visit the famous beehive huts.
What is your favourite Irish food restaurant in Ireland?
There are so many great restaurants it's difficult to make a
choice: I love the fish and chips at Marianne's in Castletownshend and
their desserts are just great. The Mustard Seed near Adare has
beautiful organic food and a very relaxed atmosphere. And for Killarney
it's definitely the Fifth Season at the Fairview Guesthouse where I had
the best Bailey's cheesecake in my life.
Which is your favourite pub in Ireland?
Taaffe's pub in Galway for the lively atmosphere and the traditional music sessions.
Where do you like to shop?
Cork or Dublin . The English market in Cork sells all kinds of
amazing food: chocolate, bread, pastry, meat & fish. I also love
exploring the small streets off Patrick's Street in Cork where you can
find many tiny shops. In Dublin I always go to Avoca in Suffolk Street
for a look at the clothes and kitchen utensils followed by the
obligatory stop at the food court. I also like to browse through the
small shops in the streets west of Grafton street where you can find
hidden treasures.
Favourite getaway in Ireland?
Ballinahinch Castle in Connemara, a lovely pseudo castle with
country house atmosphere, an amazing Park where you can take long walks
and a pub with real turf fire.
Given your experience what advice would you give to people coming to Ireland?
Always bring a rainjacket as it can start to rain when you least
expect it. And don't plan too much for a day, so you can enjoy the
landscape. There is no point stressing yourself as the roads are narrow
and winding and you need your time to get around. Signposting is a bit
adventurous at times too so you'd better make sure you have a good map.
But sometimes you end up in the most amazing places by simply taking
the wrong turn.
