A stunning 12th Century Castle, Kilkea is one of the oldest
castle hotels in Ireland situated in the rolling Kildare countryside,
an hours drive from Dublin.
Kilkea Castle's history dates back to 1180 when
it was built by Hugh de Lacy for one of his Norman noblemen, Walter de
Riddelsford. In 1414 the local O'Moores and the O'Dempsey
clans were defeated in battle at Kilkea by the Lord Justice Kildare. The
castle was rebuilt in 1426 and was later restored in 1849.
Today Kilkea Castle is truly an impressive sight, a luxury
castle hotel boasting a fully equipped leisure centre and a top quality
18-hole golf course. Each guest room is uniquely designed, with a selection
of rooms in the castle itself and some within the sympathetically designed
courtyard buildings.
This impressive castle can be rented exclusively to private groups.
The stunning formal dining room, extends almost the
full width of the castle, it provides the perfect venue for large private functions and menus, which can cater for all tastes can be provided as part of the self catering package. The
hotel also hosts a separate bar which is hugely atmospheric, decorated with suits of armour, shields
and family crests.
Kilkea Castle offers a whole host of activities with tennis,
fishing, horse riding and in particular golf. Kilkea's golf course
measures 6,100 metres from the championship tee and has been developed
to take in the magnificent setting besides the castle and the two lakes
in the grounds.
