Midleton

header-jameson-millwheel.jpgDating back to the 12th century, Midleton was traditionally the main market town of the area. It is in the hub of East Cork and perhaps is now most renowned for its distillery. The home of Irish whiskey, all major brands are produced there. The Irish Distillers group have restored an 18th century distillery and guided tours are available. The story of Irish whiskey is presented through audiovisual displays, working models and authentic machinery. Highlights of the tour include the world's largest pot still, with a capacity of over 30,000 gallons.

Midleton retains its merchant past as one can still find a wide selection of handmade lace and linen, fine porcelain, knitwear and interesting antiques among its wares.

distillery-spout.jpg Midleton is ideally located as a centre from where one can visit the many beaches in the area. Shore and lake fishing are local pursuits and one of Ireland's largest sea angling centres can be found in nearby Ballycotton.

Another local site of historical interest is Barryscourt Castle in Carrigtwohill which is currently being restored to its former splendour. There is also a craft shop there which holds regular art exhibitions. The selection of award winning restaurants and welcoming pubs and cafes in Midleton will ensure that every taste is catered for.

Testimonials

"I just wanted to let you know our Ireland trip was fabulous!!
Thank you so much!
Your recommendation to Adare Manor was a top tip!
I went to Ashford Castle as well, it was very very nice to, but my preference is still Adare Manor.
I just wish that I had booked 2 nights there instead of just one.
The B&Bs were TOP too! Especially the one in Kilkieren up in Galway. Barbara was lovely and couldn't have done more to make our stay memorable.
The Hillside House is definately one you can recommend to anyone!" -- Silke
