Old Ground Hotel

The Old Ground Hotel is a charming town house offering elegant accommodation in the lively heart of Ennis, a town renowned for its sense of history and Irish culture.

Clad in ivy and set within private gardens in the centre of the town, the Old Ground is an attractive and distinctive sight in Ennis. This old manor house, dating from the 18th Century, was once the home of the leading landowners around Ennis; the Mahon family. When one of its new owners John Mahon, returned from London to take over the family home he was greeted with the words, "You are welcome to the Old Ground Sir". This name and the welcoming sense of hospitality have been part of the Old Ground ever since.

Inside, the Old Ground is set with attractive homely lounge areas warmed by glowing open fireplaces. Each of the guest rooms are wonderfully appointed and stylishly designed, with a mix of restful colours, traditional pine furnishings, and homely comforts together with all the usual facilities.

The Old Ground has two excellent restaurants; the O'Brien Room in the heart of the hotel, a traditional homely setting for traditional favourites and home cooked dishes and the fabulous Town Hall Restaurant, one of the finest in Ennis, a modern chic affair serving contemporary European cuisine.

The Old Ground also boasts one of Ennis ' most renowned pubs, Poets Corner. Something of an institution in the town, this wonderfully characterful bar is traditionally set and boasts some of the best traditional music and craic, that Ennis has to offer.

County Clare is renowned for its musical heritage and wonderfully atmospheric landscapes around the Burren and the Cliffs of Moher. And Ennis and the Old Ground Hotel is an excellent base from which to explore this part of Ireland.

Guest Reviews of Old Ground Hotel

When we arrived, the parking lot was completely full and the surrounding area was as well. I went to check in while my husband and daughter stayed in the car. I asked the woman behind the desk where we should park and she completely took me by surprise when she grabbed her keys and said, "I'll move my car, you can have my spot!" I was very impressed.

Cynthia Mathis on Tue Sep 8 2009

Nice that it was in town, but parking was a problem--we scratched our rental car trying to squeeze into a spot in the lot--until we learned there were alternative facilities.

Michael Serrill on Tue Sep 1 2009

Fair but not special

David Nussbaum on Tue Jun 9 2009

this has an entrance right outside the main street as well as one in the back to the parking lot for easy in and out.

another wonderful experience!

Tired. Rooms in need of updating. Lights not working. Holes in bathroom ceiling. Musty. Would not recommend

Ken Hann on Fri Oct 10 2008

We would have preferred a refrigerator in the room as opposed to safe, but I am sure others greatly appreciate the safe.

Andrea Boehm on Tue Aug 12 2008

Happy with it. Would stay again.

We found all our accommodations, very surprising - We loved our trip and the varity of the different Hotels that we stayed. You guys did a great job for us. Our trip was well routed and each Hotel greeted us with a smile and no hassle. Thank you very much for the wonderful vacation. Carey and Betty Custer

Betty Custer on Fri Jul 4 2008

Much the busiest hotel we stayed at this trip. Service in the dining room could be bettered with some supervision.

Mr Trevor Kimsey on Thu Jun 26 2008

The food was really good. Fabulous lamb chops!

Mrs Margaret Morgan on Thu Jun 26 2008

Foods were terrible. Car parking place is distant, parking charge needed.

We arrived at the hotel on Saturday evening, there was a wedding party on, so parking was a bit tight. Upon checking in, the receptionist told us that we were unable to have access to our room until 6pm due to renovation work been undertaken on that wing. She was most apologetic and offered us tea, coffee, scones whilst we were waiting. We said that we would prefer to go for a walk, she arranged for our bags to be stored and delivered to our room. Upon entering our room later, we did notice a building smell (ie - dust, plaster etc.) She offered to book a table in the restaurant for dinner, however, this we declined. The breakfast was very good All in all despite the initial problems the staff here were fantastic

Ms Carol Gill on Tue Apr 22 2008

The exterior of the building is very tired, the staff were nice but not warmly friendly. The room was very standard and the phone did not work, I could not even call reception.

Ms Carla Fairweather on Tue Apr 1 2008

A warm welcome and although breakfast not the best, the evening meal was excellent and good value for money.

Robert Sharpe on Tue Mar 18 2008

I am afraid that modernisation has taken away its old charm. It lacks personal attention to make guests feel welcome. Parking was a nightmare. But location was perfect for us. I had the best salmon dish for dinner at their restaurant; breakfast needs attention.

Maria Virginia De Klerk on Tue Feb 5 2008

Superb and great hospitality.

Christine Retschlag on Mon Oct 8 2007

We are planning a return trip and this will certainly be a must stay the next time around. Absolutely beautiful hotel, and wonderful little town.

Natalie Dumas-heidt on Wed Sep 26 2007

Very nice. Wallpaper/paint could use some upgrade in dining room. Rooms nice. Church right across the street ringing bells on the hour.

For a traveler using a wheelchair, the two issues were the toilet which was too high in the accessible room bathroom and the elevator was rather "tight" to enter and exit. The bathroom sink was somewhat difficult to use with a wheelchair. There is an undercasing under the sink that prevents a wheelchair from getting too close. This is a common issue in every hotel that I stayed in. Should consider raising sink and removing undercasing placing pipes close to wall. The shower area was very open and easy to access. Wheelchair room bathroom door should open out instead of in for batter access. Another common issue at all hotels I stayed in. Bedroom area was very tight to manuever. The location was excellent and the staff was very helpful. Overall, very good location and staff.

Das zweibeste Hotel aus unserer Sicht auf unserer Rundreise.

Being across the street from theCchurch, on the last night of our trip, during a trad music festival. How much better could it be? Perfect.....

Casey Sheehan on Thu Jun 14 2007

Outstanding location with wonderful atmosphere.

Robert Johnson on Mon May 14 2007

We had a really nice stay and I had good experience and this hotel is excellent for a short break.

Celine Buckley on Wed Jan 3 2007

Some room could use remodelling. Nonstandard room types could casue an issue with groups. Hallways small but it is an older hotel. Didn't like decor too much

Sean Kelly on Thu Dec 14 2006

This was a great place to stay. We really enjoyed it and it was an added bonus to have had the Trad Festival going on during our visit. The music was awesome!!!!!!

Paul Kisselbrack on Tue Dec 5 2006

Scrffy in comparison to other hotels on the trip. Also noisy and very busy

David Henderson on Sun Oct 1 2006

Very pleased with the Old Ground. It's location in Ennis very convenient to shopping and places of interest to tourists. Good breakfast. The pub is quite nice - good food, reasonable price.

Chris Rowland on Mon Aug 28 2006

Nice

Dan Campbell on Sat Jul 1 2006

There staff were wonderful, really went out of their way for you. Very conveniently located both within town as well as to sites you would want to go see.

Pam Mcalexander on Thu Jun 8 2006

This was our least favorite spot. the room was really warm and the staff in the hotel were not as friendly hnd helpful as we found in all the other B and B's we stayed at. We really really really loved athe B and B's.

Barbara Gude on Thu Aug 4 2005

Unfortuatly the people in our room before us were heavy smokers. It was not aired out properly and the smell was unbearable. We had to move from our lovely suite, to a lesser room.
