Pontoon is a popular location for anglers of all kinds, situated between Lough Conn and Lough Cullin and close to the River Moy, fisheries renowned for their salmon and brown trout.
More an area than a town, Pontoon is the thin stretch of land lying between Lough Conn and Lough Cullin . The area is widely renowned for its prolific salmon and trout runs throughout the year, attracting anglers from all over the world.
Lough Conn has big runs of salmon and grilse each season, with several hundred salmon caught each year. Conn is also an important brown trout fishery and there are plenty of boats and ghillies available around both Lough Conn and Lough Cullin. Lough Conn drains into River Moy, the best-known game fishery in the region and Ireland's most prolific salmon river. In 1996, some 12,305 salmon were caught by rod and line on the Moy, and the average annual salmon catch over the last ten years has been 7,660. The river has eleven separate fisheries and the Moy offers a wide variety of fishing, from top-class fly water to worm fishing, to spinning.
Pontoon lies within some of Mayo's richest countryside and there are some challenging walking routes and scenic drives through the Nephin Mountains close by.
