The Royal
Portrush
Like a bit of history with your golf? To say Royal Portrush is
steeped in heritage is an understatement. The course is overlooked by the
dramatic ruins of 13th century Dunluce Castle perched precariously on an
isolated crag, jutting from the sea. (A mere 360 years ago, part of the castle
actually fell into the sea during a storm!). The famous links course itself has
quite a colourful history and can boast more than few firsts. Founded in 1888,
King Edward VII became patron and granted the course Royal status in
1893.
Right from the
outset Royal Portrush was renowned for its superb turf, great playing qualities
and magnificent setting. In 1951 Royal Portrush became the only course to host
the British Open, and in more recent years, was the venue for the Seniors Open.
In 1998, the course was voted No 8 in the Golf World Survey of the 100 greatest
courses in the British Isles and is a must-play stopover for many professionals
eager to experience one of the toughest golf challenges there is.
Get set to have
your nerves and shot making skills tested by the notorious 5th hole and the
green hanging on the edge of the cliff. Calamity Corner, the par 3 14th of 200
yards, has earned its name and fearsome reputation.
The Royal Belfast
Founded in 1881,
the Royal Belfast, Ireland's oldest golf club, is tucked away amidst woodlands.
It's easy to see why this site was chosen. Royal Belfast epitomises all that is
great about parkland golf with its large fast greens and gentle, subtly sloping
fairways. The Club has inspired the phenomenal growth and popularity of golf
across Ireland, setting the standards for courses and players. The present course was designed by H. C. Colt, eminent course architect,
who also laid out Royal Portrush.
The first hole is one of the best openers in Irish Golf, setting
the pace for thrills to come...
The Royal County Down
The looming Mourne Mountains at
your back, the stretch of golden stand arcing towards the horizon before you . .
. like emerald ribbons scattered among tall sandhills wrapped in heather and
gorse, the Royal County Down presents an irresistible challenge.
It's a natural setting for a golf course. According to its
designer, the legendary Tom Morris, 'already 90% to being a golf course' when he
laid it out in 1889 and received 4 guineas payment. The course was made Royal by
Prince Edward VII in 1908 and continues to be a favourite of the famous, among
them Tom Watson as a British Open warm up welcome.
Loved and feared in equal measure, the Royal County Down
consists of two 18-hole courses to challenge the most expert golfer.
