Tower Museum in Derry

This award-winning museum outlines the intriguing story of Derry City, from its founding by St Columba, through momentous events like the Siege of Derry and Bloody Sunday.

Housed in a 16th Century tower house by Derry's historic city walls facing the city's Guildhall, the Tower Museum was opened in 1992 and provides an interpretive and impartial account of the troubled history of this often divided city.

Using audio visual and the latest technology, the museum illustrates some of the most important events in the Derry City's history from the Siege of Derry of 1689 during the Williamite Wars to the more recent Troubles and the Battle of the Bogside and Bloody Sunday of 1969. The museum has been recently fitted with a major exhibition, the Armada in Ireland, outlining the disastrous retreat of the Spanish Armada around the Irish Coast. The exhibition contains artefacts recovered from La Trinidad Valencera, shipwrecked off the coast of Donegal in 1588.
