Tuam

header.jpgOne of the most historic towns in the west of Ireland, Tuam is situated on the N17 just 20 miles north of Galway . Today it has a population of 6,000 but owes its existance to a monastic settlement dating from the 6th century.

The town was founded by St. Jarlath and his legacy is very much alive today. Temple Jarlath at High Street, marks the site of the earliest monastic settlement in Tuam, established by Jarlath circa 526-527 A.D. St. Jarlath's College is one of the most famous secondary schools in the country, where sporting and academic accolades are regularly achieved.

Tuam has two cathedrals, a Roman Catholic cathedral and a Church of Ireland cathedral. The Roman Catholic cathedral was completed in 1836 and has since undergone a number of renovations. The Church of Ireland cathedral, St. Mary's is regarded as the finest cathedral in Connacht and parts of it date from the 12th century. Today, Tuam is a thriving industrial and commercial town with a strong agricultural connection.

There are a wide range of activities in the area including fishing, golf, pitch n putt, pony trekking and swimming. If you are attending the Galway Racing Festival , Tuam is a useful alternative for accommodation at this busy time.

Testimonials

"I just wanted to let you know our Ireland trip was fabulous!!
Thank you so much!
Your recommendation to Adare Manor was a top tip!
I went to Ashford Castle as well, it was very very nice to, but my preference is still Adare Manor.
I just wish that I had booked 2 nights there instead of just one.
The B&Bs were TOP too! Especially the one in Kilkieren up in Galway. Barbara was lovely and couldn't have done more to make our stay memorable.
The Hillside House is definately one you can recommend to anyone!" -- Silke
