Co. Cork
Description
Union Hall is a picturesque fishing town in West Cork. A huge white church, a sort of gateway to
Union Hall, dominates the entrance to town.
The summertime streets were crowded with kids and bicycles, their
parents walking after them - it seems like a quiet, family place.
There are loads of hidden, archaeological pockets to explore
around here. Lots of pretty place along
the water; this is a good place to check out by car.
What to See and Do
Angling and deep-sea fishing are popular in this
seafaring village, as well as diving, canoeing, and skiing. Follow the signs to Ross Pier, a road that
goes south along the peninsula, through farmland to a very picturesque spot
along the water. Watch swans feeding,
explore a colorful boatyard of dried up vessels, and look at Castletownshend
across the water. Drive out on the
peninsula -- follow the signs to Myross, going over a bridge to another harbor
at the east end of the peninsula. Visit
Drombeg Stone Circle, northeast of Union Hall, outside of Glandore. Visit Rineen Park, a sea bay with pretty
trails around the edge and wooden benches to sit amidst purple flowers. The Dromillihy forest park is a good place to
walk and get the blood flowing, on the N71 road to Leap. See fisherman bringing in their catch at the
pier back in town. Education yourself
about the history of the area at the Ceim Hill Museum. The Union Hall Community Centre has Irish
Dancing for children on Wednesdays and adults on Fridays. The Shamrock Bar has discos on Fridays,
Saturdays, and Sundays.
Where to Eat and
Drink
Marinero's fine food and coffee house serves lunch, tea, and
dinner. Open every day, with lunches
such as beef stifado with oven-roasted potatoes. Expect fresh, home baked scones and gourmet
coffees. Dinty's Bar is the local pub
and looks like a fun hang out. Casey's
Bar serves fresh seafood, pulled in locally.
Where to Sleep
Boatman's Inn on Main Street in town. Maria's Schoolhouse is a quaint, converted
schoolhouse on the edge of town. The
Seascape B&B is right by the water.
Or rent a Pier Holiday Home for your entire family.
