Waterford Castle

Dating from the 16th Century, the exquisite Waterford Castle is situated on its own island, adjacent to a challenging 18-hole championship golf course 6 miles downstream from Waterford City.

Ireland has many islands and many castles, but there are few castle isles like this. Waterford Castle is unique, set on an isle of 300 acres, a short private ferry from the mainland, and its history stretches back to the 11th Century. This sheltered isle was once home to the Fitzgeralds who during the 15th & 16th Centuries governed most of the south of Ireland and used Waterford Castle as their leisurely retreat. The original Norman tower was rebuilt in the 15th Century and forms the centrepiece of the present castle, which was substantially added to throughout the 19th Century.

The Castle is a splendid representation of Victorian Jacobean design with stonewalls and mock turrets shrouded in ages old ivy. Through the carved granite arch and studded oak doors of the tower gate entrance is the oldest part of the castle, the entrance hall decked in rich tapestries, Elizabethan Oak panelling, fine 16th Century plaster ceiling and dominated by its huge chimney breast with roaring fire and hand carved Fitzgerald coat of arms. Throughout its grand drawing rooms, Waterford Castle is luxuriously furnished with fine Irish antiquities and oil paintings in keeping with the charm and character of the hotel.

Each of the sumptuous guest rooms are wonderfully appointed, furnished with antiques and delicately set with period details, evoking the charm and splendour of a past age while being fully equipped with the comforts and conveniences expected by today's discerning traveller.

The hotel's Munster Room is the elegant venue for fine dining by flickering candlelight and closeted by oak panelling. Award winning cuisine is offered from locally sourced seasonal produce with samples from the menu such as, Seared Breast of Wild Mallard, Choucroute, Red Currents and Orange & Star Anis Reduction or Fillet of Aged Beef, Parsnip Crisps, Onion Marmalade and Bearnaise Sauce.

Waterford Castle's golf course is a challenging 18-hole championship course set across 205 acres of the island and was designed by world-class Irish golfer Des Smyth. The hotel's other activities include tennis, croquet and scenic walks and the setting alone provides for a unique experience.

Guest Reviews of

the restaurant was extremely expensive.

Anne Rodriguez on Wed Jul 20 2011

Loved the castle and the grounds but not a whole lot to do in Waterford. Although it broke the drive up a bit.

Diane Ross on Wed Jul 20 2011

Our first castle but it was very enjoyable and they were most accommodating.

Darlene Burns on Wed Jun 22 2011

Lovely property...nice to see once.

Dorothy Smyk on Thu May 5 2011

This was my favorite place of all. Reception was great with a warm welcome. The food in the bar was great and the bartender here was kind and caring. He took notice and ask about my husband as he was in a depressed mood realizing he would not eat the food because nearly every dish contained something he could not eat or would not eat. The computer access there allowed him to work one night as he was not tired. The staff didn't mind and it put my husband at ease so he could get a little further on unfinished business. The breakfast was great. The landscape was great. I can not think of anything I disliked about the castle.

tired. needs a facelift

Ian Muller on Thu Oct 7 2010

Amazing location to explore. and good for touring area. room huge, bed great but Bath a little old fashioned and exposed. we were in the Ormand Suite. toilet right above the hotel entry. Sink looked out over table where diners waited to be called. Furniture in suite was a little old looking (not bed) but rest of hotel was lovely. Dining service nice hotel staff nice but very busy. Food good but not amazing. But dining room and breakfast room so beautiful who knows what you're eating.

Mrs Carol Zepfel on Wed Aug 11 2010

Waterford Castle was by far my favorite accommodation in Ireland. Not only is it a beautiful castle with gorgeous rooms, but the staff is wonderful. They were very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. I highly recommend a stay at this beautiful castle.

Renay Picard on Tue Jul 27 2010

There is no doubt on the matter of location. Waterford is a beautiful, quiet, relaxing place. We did not have adequate time to partake of any of Waterford's available activities/facilities, but we enjoyed walking the castle grounds and breathing in the cool, fresh air. The dining experience was excellent and the breakfast next day was sumptuous. We also enjoyed the city of Waterford as well and would recommend that any traveler to Ireland needs to see it. However, the staff at Waterford were a bit of a let-down. They remained distant and did not help at all with our "set down" or departure. I suppose it may have been different if we had been "somebody".

Frank Johnson on Thu Jun 17 2010

really nice

Olin Hoover on Thu May 27 2010

This was a beautiful place to stay, and I am sure it is much more breath-taking in the summer with everything in full bloom. However, not much for us to do, not even a gift shop to buy souveniers. The food in the bar was great and the waitor was very nice. The bed was very small for us, so we did not get a very good night sleep. We did alot of walking and it was very pretty. For the golfer I am sure this would be a great place to stay -however, not much for kids to do either.

Kay Delaney on Fri Mar 26 2010

This was by far our favorite place that we stayed and ate. (Even better than the Adare Manor!) The staff was amazing, everone to the valet to the wait staff. Taking the ferry to the island and driving around the property was just the beginning of this beautiful place. The concierge was very nice and took us up to the room while the valet parked our rental and brought up our luggage. We stayed in the Hurst (which was on a corner) so we had beautiful views. And we had a real key! We took a walk down to the golf club and had lunch then walked around the beautiful grounds. We ate in the dining room that night and it was our best meal, which is saying a lot. The lobster salad was the best thing I've ever eated! We ate in the conservatory which was very romantic with candlelight and the glass ceiling let in the moonlight. When we got back up to our room, our bed was turned down with fresh water. We took a soak in the amazing claw foot tub. All in all, I wished we could have stayed another night and the next time we go to Ireland, we will be staying here!

Jaime Hunter on Tue Feb 23 2010

lack of a spa and short on staff are negatives.

Samuel Diaz on Mon Feb 22 2010

The staff went out if it's way to assist me because this was our first stop after my first-ever attempt at driving on the opposite side of the road and manuevering Ireland's narrow and winding roads. I was stressed when I arrived and the staff kindly offered me tea to rest my nerves and were very kind.

Gay France on Mon Nov 2 2009

Wow we loved it. The help was very helpful. People need to love quiet to be able to enjoy it.

Coleen Cox on Wed Oct 21 2009

The hotel was in a lovley location and was beautiful to look at. The room had a 4 poster bed which was nice. The dinner and breakfast were very good. The breakfast room was very sunny and cheerful and the bar looked to be very inviting.

Martha Breen on Sun Oct 18 2009

Absolutely loved it! I am so glad you recommended staying at Waterford as we all loved it and wished for another night.

Virginia Covnet on Mon Sep 7 2009

Great Castle hotel!!

Jake Massey on Mon Aug 17 2009

beautiful location and atmospheric. pricey for what you get room wise....

Sally Walker on Mon Aug 10 2009

By far the highlight of our trip... furnishings were lovely, dinner was unforgettable and service could not have been any better. We did not want to leave....

Tara Welles-Jones on Thu Jul 23 2009

There were very little activities available.

Susan Mainprize on Wed Jul 8 2009

This was truly a fantastic resort. Food is great but expensive, lounge is great and grounds were good. Top Notch staff. Our room was way to small for a four star resort. Front desk claimed it was not the smallest room, if so, you will be unhappy if you get a smaller one. Perfect hotel except the size of the room.

Jack Black on Mon Jun 29 2009

Waterford was marvelous, room was huge and beautiful and so were its surroundings.Food was great we joined a special dinner with local suppliers of food and drinks, memorable

Helena Conceicao on Thu Jun 18 2009

We really enjoyed staying here. The place was beautiful and the staff was great. We would definitely stay again.

Pamela Roesner on Wed Jun 17 2009

this an amazing place to visit and so serene.

Sandy Beerman on Tue Apr 21 2009

Very nice and staff were great

Victoria Blocker on Fri Nov 28 2008

Everyone should experience the Waterford Castle. Not only did we receive exceptional service, the hospitality provided went beyond our expectations. We loved our butler! It was also the first time someone ever turned down our bed and picked up my clothes and left me another chocolate while I was away at dinner! Such a joy! I recommend everyone to make sure they get an opportunity to stay here when they come to Ireland.

Shirley Connolly on Mon Nov 24 2008

No hot water in the morning

Steven Cole on Tue Nov 18 2008

The absoluate best in service and accommendations..luxery with a capital L..when you take the ferry to the Castle, you immeduately enter into a peaceful and serence, magical place..the staff were exceptional..we felt like a king & Queen!

Linda Graniero on Mon Oct 13 2008

The room was lovely. They are working on the grounds. Food was good, but dinner was $$$. Did not like it as well as Ballynahinch Castle Hotel.

John Mccarthy on Sat Sep 27 2008

Better directions would have been helpfull

Randy Reardon on Wed Sep 24 2008

Lovely for 1 night but unless you are a golfer, there isn't much to do. We used "google maps" to print out directions to all the hotels and that proved to be of tremendous help. Thank you for guiding us through Ireland..would definately recommend your services to others.

Patricia Lang on Mon Sep 22 2008

Wow best meal I ever ate was the supper!!!The breakfast too was exquisite so my sons and husband tell me as (i mentionned I can't eat eggs so breakfast is rather a bore for me. Staff very efficient . The bed was very comfortable .This was way beyond my usual $$ I would normally spend on a hotel... it was a special experience and we have no regrets...

Teresa Mcaran on Sun Aug 17 2008

The bed looked as old as the castle, it had no firmness. Other then that it was great.

Colleen Seiter on Sun Jul 20 2008

Everything from check in, to check out was perfect! The entire staff was very attentive, and always made sure all our needs were met. Would love to return.

Rita Pace on Sat Jul 5 2008

Absolutely our favorite castle/hotel out of all of them. The staff was great, offered to park our car, showed us around, very willing & friendly to help. Located on an Island so it was pretty quiet. Food was wonderful, room service was quick and had lots to chose from on things to do (even a picnic). Room was very spacious, hotel was just perfect.

William Hughes on Sun Jun 15 2008

Everything was EXCELLENT. The sutie was just beautiful.

Mrs Kathy Thierfeldt on Tue Apr 22 2008

We did not have hot water in the morning and were unable to shower prior to our departure. The location was difficult to reach as direction signage to the hotel was sparse. The ferry across was neat and very accessable.

Chris Young on Wed Oct 31 2007

Plumbing in bathroom was less than acceptable.

Michael & Jeannie Cole on Thu Oct 11 2007

We were not impressed with this castle and we would not stay here again for the cost of what they were asking .

Angela Schmidt on Wed Sep 26 2007

Ferry to island was great. Finding facility was not easy, it would be nice if you provided directions to hotels. Waterford will be great when they finish their expansion in 2010.

Don Dunham on Tue Sep 25 2007

Bathroom needs updating and the bed was awful!

Connie Boczarski on Wed Sep 5 2007

Brilliant. The exceptional marks above are fully deserved. A superb chef who never put a foot wrong. Top class service and a lovely position. But it is pricey, and it is a difficult balance when you are at the top to guage value for money.

Mr Fawssett on Tue Sep 4 2007

Being on the island, was great. You had no car noise or people showing up late in the night. Wonderful walking paths and wild game along the way. The bathroom just took our breathe away. It felt like you had just stepped back in time.

Pauline Newcomb on Tue Aug 7 2007

Not sure how much this cost...but this was an exceptional experience.

Mike Bowen on Tue Aug 7 2007

This was our second visit to the Waterford Castle and it was just as wonderful this time as it was 5 years ago. Even better, this time we were able to meet Jack Nicklaus, who was also staying that night. That was quite a thrill, especially for my sons.

Michael Saey on Wed Jul 11 2007

Very nice room. It was a very nice place.

Erik Peterson on Tue Jul 10 2007

For a traveler using a wheelchair, there was bathtub only which presented a difficult issue to access and enter. The bathroom sink was somewhat difficult to use with a wheelchair. It is very low and there is an undercasing under the sink that prevents a wheelchair from getting too close. This is a common issue in every hotel that I stayed in. Should consider raising sink and removing undercasing placing pipes close to wall. Due to te age of the facility, the access around the rest of the hotel is not ramped. Portable ramps are used and left in place during stay. May need assistance to use ramp from bedroom to main lobbay/restaurant and bar. The staff was accommodating and the Castle is a very relaxing and nice place to stay.

Tim Donovan on Tue Jul 10 2007

Hospitality was a touch below the 5 star castle/manors, but was really nice. The rooms were roomy and really nicely updated. The folks luggage arrived before dinner here so all wer quite happy that we didn't have to start loaning/borrowing to cover dress for dinner which we had palanned to be dressy/jackets and ties, etc. Food here for dinner and breakfast was excellent as was the service for dinner. Not much for facilities here except golf if you were staying longer. The birds and flowering plants, etc were quite beautiful as they were at most of the places we stayed (Aston and Davenport being the exceptions)

Richard Lockwood on Mon Jul 2 2007

We were disappointed by Waterford Castle. The staff was cold and a little unfriendly. Worst service of anyplace we stayed. However, staying on a hotel which had it's own island was neat. Will definitely stay somewhere else next time we're in waterford, however.

Alyson Riffey on Sat Jun 30 2007

Beautiful setting. Had rain the day we arrived. Did not get to the hotel until 9:30 pm or so. Roads were not always well marked to get to the ferry. Was confused about the voucher. Did not realize until Harrington Hall that the voucher was on a standard sheet of paper. It differed so radically from the B&B vouchers, did not realize I had to give it to the clerk.

Bob Allen on Mon May 21 2007

We loved it, but the sad thing was that we didn't have much time here since we spent too much time enjoying the country side.

Daniel Gore on Thu May 17 2007

One night stay is perfect.

Jaclyn Ruiz on Mon May 14 2007

A very special place. Wonderful attentive friendly staff and a great atmosphere throughout. A really memorable place to stay - absolutely loved it!

Paul O'Brien on Mon Dec 18 2006

Thank You, Barbara Lynn traveling with Faith Benson.

Faith Benson on Mon May 22 2006

Very authentic castle with interesting history. Unique as located on an island minutes by ferry from the mainland a bit outside the city centre. Ideal for quite time relaxing. Own golf course, and walks round the grounds. A feeling of going back in time. Excellent restaurant, all rooms individually decorated

Joan O'Connell on Tue Nov 29 2005

history to castle. ferry crossing would excite many. beautiful surroundings with some good facilities ie: shooting, leisure. public areas attractive. rooms vary in size but are spacious enough for a couple. not too far from city

Jenna Burton on Tue Nov 29 2005

on first arrival you know that you are stepping back in time to a real castle. the entrance is very welcoming, the castle grounds are specatular espically as you are omn your very own private island

Elma Connelly on Tue Nov 29 2005

We enjoyed our stay at the castle. It was nice to be on an island. It was very relaxing and we enjoyed the nature walk and scenary.

Erin Daniels on Mon Oct 17 2005

The Waterford Castle was amazing to stay in. We ate in the Castle at the restaurant and the food was exceptional! It was pricey, but well worth it. The grounds around the castle were beautiful and the employees were very friendly. Definetly would go back here again!

Testimonials

"I just wanted to let you know our Ireland trip was fabulous!!
Thank you so much!
Your recommendation to Adare Manor was a top tip!
I went to Ashford Castle as well, it was very very nice to, but my preference is still Adare Manor.
I just wish that I had booked 2 nights there instead of just one.
The B&Bs were TOP too! Especially the one in Kilkieren up in Galway. Barbara was lovely and couldn't have done more to make our stay memorable.
The Hillside House is definately one you can recommend to anyone!" -- Silke
