 Newcastle boasts perhaps one of Northern Ireland's most famous beaches and is situated at the foot of the Mourne Mountains. It is the ideal place to begin any walk or trek of the mountains as it lies in the shadow of Slieve Donard, Northern Ireland's highest peak. Newcastle has all the trappings that go with a seaside resort, the amusements, caravan parks, takeaways, restaurants and of course a golf course. However, the one at Newcastle is no ordinary golf course. The Royal County Down Golf club is one of the most famous links courses in Ireland.
In Newcastle you can never be short of something to do. Even if it is a gentle walk or serious climb which you are after, the Mourne Mountains are ideal. The almost endless combination of walks include some which will take you to the highest point in Northern Ireland. From there you can see most of the southwest coast of Scotland, Cumbria and the Isle of Man. At night you can even see the lights of Dublin some 70 miles away.
Getting to Newcastle is easy with up to 5 bus services a day from Belfast and 6 services on the return journey, making a trip from the city to Newcastle an ideal way to spend a fine summer's day.
